Breast Reconstruction

What is Breast Reconstruction

Every woman’s anatomy and goals are unique, so treatment is tailored individually.

  • Implant-based reconstruction: A two-step method using a temporary expander followed by a soft silicone implant, offering shorter surgery and recovery.
  • Latissimus-dorsi (LD) flap: A small flap of skin and muscle from the back provides new chest coverage, with or without an implant. The scar hides under the bra line, and shoulder strength is preserved.
  • DIEP or Free-TRAM flap: Abdominal tissue is used to create the most natural feel. The DIEP preserves muscle; the TRAM uses a small portion for extra blood flow. Many clients also benefit from a flatter tummy and a low bikini-line scar.
  • Finishing touches: Fat transfer, nipple-areola reconstruction, or balancing procedures on the opposite breast may be added for symmetry.

Together, we choose the option best suited to your skin, health, and preferences, ensuring results that look natural and feel beautifully you.

Ideal Candidate

You may be ready for reconstruction if you have oncologic clearance, maintain a stable weight, and are willing to pause smoking for optimal healing. Many women choose the procedure to enjoy naturally balanced curves again, without needing special bra inserts, and to feel confidently themselves in both everyday clothing and intimate moments.

Consultation & Personalised Planning

Your first visit is an open conversation followed by a 3-D design session. We review your medical file with our multidisciplinary team, simulate potential outcomes, and map a staged journey that may include nipple-areola creation and gentle balancing of the opposite breast. You leave with a clear timeline, transparent fees, and a direct line to your care team for any questions.

The Day of Surgery — What to Expect

On the morning of your reconstruction you’ll arrive at Guess Clinic’s private surgical suite, meet the nursing and anesthesia teams, and change into a soft gown while final checks are completed. Once you are comfortably asleep under gentle general anesthesia, Dr Guessous begins the operation; most breast-reconstruction procedures take about two hours from first incision to final skin closure.

When the last absorbable suture is placed, you move to the recovery bay where a dedicated nurse monitors you as the anesthesia wears off. Discomfort is usually mild during the first night and is managed with the medication plan discussed at your pre-op visit. You’ll spend two to three days in our on-site care unit so we can keep pain well-controlled, support early shoulder movement, and show you how to use the soft post-surgery bra provided. Before you go home we review dressings, prescriptions, and your personalised recovery calendar so you leave feeling secure and well-prepared.

Recovery Timeline

  • Days 1–3: Private-room stay with IV pain relief and guided shoulder stretches.
  • Days 4–10: Dressings replaced with breathable tape; shower permitted; dissolvable sutures need no removal.
  • Weeks 2–4: Return to desk work; supportive bra worn around the clock; gentle walks welcome.
  • Week 6: Light cardio resumes; heavier lifting postponed.
  • Months 3–12: Scars soften; optional fat-grafting or nipple tattoo completes the aesthetic journey.

Safeguards & Peace-of-Mind

Your wellbeing guides every decision at Guess Clinic. From the moment you enter our ISO-certified theatres, every step is designed to protect, comfort, and reassure: prophylactic antibiotics, fluorescence imaging that confirms flawless blood flow in real time, and a Keller-Funnel® “no-touch” technique that keeps implants pristine.

Most women experience only the expected, short-lived side effects of any surgery: temporary swelling, mild bruising, or a small fluid collection that the body re-absorbs. All concerns are swiftly managed by Dr Guessous and his on-call nursing team, available 24 / 7. Routine follow-ups, gentle physiotherapy, and our open-door policy mean you’re never alone on your journey; we stay by your side until you’re comfortably enjoying your new balance and freedom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I regain sensation?
Autologous flaps can partially reconnect sensory nerves; feeling improves for many patients over 12–24 months. Implant reconstructions typically remain less sensitive, though soft-tissue grafting may aid comfort.

How long do implants last?
Modern silicone implants can remain stable for decades. We advise imaging at the five-year mark and then every two to three years.

What happens if I need radiation?
Radiation can follow either reconstruction type. Implant patients may experience higher contracture rates; DIEP flaps often tolerate radiation better. Planning is coordinated with your oncologist to optimise timing.

Can I combine reconstruction with symmetry surgery on the other breast?
Yes. Lift, reduction, or augmentation of the contralateral breast during the same or a later stage achieves the most balanced silhouette.
