Face and neck refreshment or mini-lift

za Face and neck refreshment

Classic facelift and neck lift and face and neck refreshment are two methods of facial rejuvenation and embellishment.

Dr. Mohamed Guessous considers the classic facelift as an old technique, it’s a heavy surgery with a long healing period and sometimes scars remain visible. It aims to tighten the skin, it erases wrinkles but gives a less expressive aspect, the face looks tense and rigid. It is for all these reasons that women think they all look alike after having a classic facelift.

This is why the mini-lift came to thwart these few significant results of the classic facelift.

Note that the face and neck refreshment practiced during the last decade by more concerned surgeons, sensitive to the trend set by the public and the media, is a gentle intervention, lighter and more accurate with natural and more “human” results.

Also note that this procedure is not used to erase wrinkles or fine lines for which some soft techniques are most appropriate: laser, fillers, Botox, skin peeling treatment and mesotherapy. It is rather a solution against facial structures’ sagging and sliding.

Who is it adressed to?

Refreshment may be done at all ages as soon as there is skin sagging, after a quick weight loss for example; sometimes early slackening is genetic and may occur even from the age of 25 – 30.

The face and neck refreshment surgery or mini-lift, is a very minor surgery, performed under local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation. It leaves almost invisible scars, and aims to lift sagging areas by putting them back in their place.
For each part of the face namely for four levels: the eyebrows, cheeks, jowls and neck, through a small hidden and very discreet incision we pass under the skin and through a small tunnel we will reposition the muscle and fat tissues to their original location and fix them with a stitch.
  •  Level 1 : : In the case of sagging eyebrows: the technique is to put them back up in their place through a small hidden incision in the scalp and more specifically near the temples. More generally known as dummy clip, this process will allow a clear view and enlightened eyes.
  • Level 2 : For the cheeks: when the cheekbone falls, the face looks tired and flushed, causing the appearance of the ring, it’s the circle that appears under the eyes with a bluish or purplish eyelids. Ptosis (or lowering) of the cheekbone makes the skin of the lower eyelid thin. The vale of tears appears as a hollow line that divides the cheekbone in two, and we can see the nasolabial fold between the cheek and the nose. To restructure the sunken cheeks, an incision hidden in the scalp at the temples is performed; through this incision and using forceps the falling part is repositioned at its original location and fixed with a stitch with a very fine resorbable suture.
Then the crease between the nose and cheek disappears, the purplish hollow of the ring is reduced and the cheekbone finds its original appearance and volume. In the case where the face has lost its volume, it is suitable to combine this process with a fat graft or lipofilling to provide additional volume.
  • Level 3 : For the cheeks: When the cheek falls, the face looks tired and hollow, this is due to fat and muscle that has accumulated down the cheek. This accumulation is concentrated beyond the line of the face oval by making the cheek fall to the lower lip and reveals what is called the bitterness fold. To reshape this part of the face an incision is made inside the tragus of the ear, then runs under the skin to reach the tissues that are concentrated towards the lower part of the face and returned harmoniously in the cheek, which gives the face its original look.
  • Level 4 : On the neck, one can notice a slight slackening of the plasma muscle. This muscle is located on the side of the neck and causes onset muscle ropes because of excess skin that accumulates towards the middle of the neck and becomes difficult to conceal. In order to give the neck youth and beautiful contours, an incision is made behind the ear. From this incision the platysma muscle is repositioned and the right angle between the neck and the chin is completely redesigned. In some cases, fatty deposits can be located at the double chin, in order to have harmonious and meaningful results, it is necessary to combine this technique with a liposuction of the double chin.

Postoperative effects

The face and neck refreshment gives immediate, impressive and natural results. Postoperative effects are simple and getting back to normal life is fast.

It is satisfactory in 100% of cases because it respects the anatomical architecture of each face, and preserves the specific features of each person; they say that one can simply get his younger face back without any changes.

The surgery takes 20 minutes for each side plus the duration of sutures. The used anesthesia is adapted and light. After one night at the clinic with a bandage on the head, the patient leaves the clinic without dressings but swollen with some bruises.

sed stitches are absorbable. Sometimes a slight bruising may occur and some swelling of the cheeks. Lymphatic drainage of the face is recommended from the 5th day, 5 days in a row to accelerate the disappearance of edema. The patient looks fine after 1 to 2 weeks. The first shampoo may be done on the 5th day.
