Abdominoplasty – Tummy tuck

This is a cosmetic surgery aims to regain a flat stomach and skin and muscle tone.
This type of surgery can:

  1. Remove excess fat located in the lower part of the stomach by using liposuction.
  2. Tighten the muscles, which will refine the figure.
  3. Remove the excess skin with a lifting, then rewrap skin for a restructured stomach.
  4. Replace the pubis ptosis (falling).
  5. Replace the belly button / navel to its position.

Abdominoplasty strengthens the abdomen muscles while giving the patient a flat and firm belly.

Who is it addressed to ?

Abdominoplasty is aimed at both men and women who want to regain a flat stomach. For women, it is made after several pregnancies or after significant weight loss, which causes the skin around their abdomen to sag and muscles to become loose. In case of men, abdominoplasty is indicated when excess in belly fat and sagging skin resulting from weight loss.

Procedure

Dr. Mohamed Guessous performs Abdominoplasty under neuroleptic – analgesia (light sleep) associated with local anesthesia. General anesthesia is possible upon the patient’s request and lasts one hour.

There are several types of abdominoplasty, whatever the technique, it is done in five steps:

First, Dr. Guessous performs liposuction of subcutaneous belly excess fat. Then, he repairs and tightens the abdominal muscles using absorbable sutures. He removes excess skin by pulling up and down and places a scar just above the pubic bone, equivalent to a caesarean surgery but it may be extended depending on the amount of skin to be removed. The same incision is used to lift and raise the falling pubis with stitches. We may also make a pubis liposuction if it is too curved.

The belly button’s location is extremely important for the final result, which is why it is usually kept and replaced in the same place. In some cases, we have no choice and a new belly button is recreated. The belly button remains in place and to be able to bring it to the surface, a small circular buttonhole is placed.

In some cases a mini tummy tuck is performed when the stomach is a bit flacid and stretch marks appear just below the belly button. For this type of intervention, the same steps are performed except the navel or belly button is held in place.

Closure is made with invisible absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed. The scar usually depends on the case; it is similar to a caesarean scar, hidden in the lower fold of the stomach, which makes it easily concealable. In the case where a woman already had a Caesarean scar it will just be replaced by a new scar that will be more aesthetically pleasing.

Postoperative effects

After a tummy tuck, a compression outfit must be worn for 3-4 weeks to minimize swelling. Compression stockings must also be worn for a period of 10 days.

This type of surgery is not very painful, but analgesics and anticoagulants are prescribed in order to avoid feeling the pain and also to prevent venous thrombosis of the lower limbs.

Result is immediately visible, but swelling and edema appear at all sucked up areas from the fifth day giving the swollen appearance, which is annoying but not painful. After the 15th day (peak) you will start to notice the swelling gradually decrease over the next month to a month and a half. This is why we start the lymphatic drainage from the fifth day.

A practitioner at the Spa or a physiotherapist who has studied these techniques performs manual lymphatic drainage. It helps prevent the accumulation of edema. We recommend one session per day for 10 days following the procedure. This eliminates 80% of edema. The residual edema requires a month or two to go away completely.

Dressing changes are made on the fifth postoperative day and they are permanently removed on the 8th day.

A slight numbness and decreased sensation may be felt for some time in the lower part of the belly, but these inconveniences disappear quickly by having lymphatic drainage.

Once the swelling has faded, the result is visible and very significant. It will continue to improve over time to be perfect after a few months. Healing from an abdominalplasty is slow since this is a major surgery. Patients can resume normal activity in about 4 weeks. It is not recommended to practice sports and sun exposure for at least 2 months.
